On September 5, 2005 ; a 23 year old college student narrowly escaped being abducted in broad daylight as she was about to get into her car. The kidnap suspect arrested in Bakersfield, reportedly approached the young lady as she walked to her vehicle.
He asked her if she wanted to go for a coffee, when she refused he produced a screwdriver and tried to force her into the car. When she screamed and blew the horn on the vehicle, the suspect ran off.
He was arrested a short time later. On July 10 th of this year, in Cumberland, two men jumped out of a car, grabbed a woman and tried to force her into their vehicle. She managed to escape but was terrified by the incident. Just a few days earlier on July 6 th , a very similar occurrence took place in Portland . The kidnap suspect arrested in Bakersfield attempted to commit the same offence that takes place every day on the streets of every major city in America . According to the places mentioned above it also takes place in some very small cities and towns. The sad reality is violent crime really has become an epidemic in the USA .
The scary part is a lot of these crimes take place in broad daylight. Daytime assaults, robberies, and attempted kidnappings happen so often in this country they don't even make the daily news.
The kidnap suspect arrested in Bakersfield didn't make his kidnapping attempt in broad daylight because the conditions were ideal, he made the attempt in daylight because he thought he could get away with it.
The incidents mentioned above were all failed attempts. The reality is many more happen every day that don't fail. Many more that do fail never get reported to the police out of fear or the victims having little confidence in the justice system.
As these criminals become more brazen, it becomes clearer that our streets, our parking lots and indeed our schoolyards are becoming more dangerous. The kidnap suspect arrested in Bakersfield broke off his assault when the victim screamed and made a scene by blowing her car horn.
If you feel you are about to be assaulted or feel threatened, this is a good way to attract attention. Scream, yell as loud as you can and run if you can- anything to bring attention to your situation.
Remember most criminals will run if the feel anyone else might get involved. Please report any failed kidnapping attempts. You might save someone else's life. |
