| All around the world, weather patterns are changing and the weather is becoming more and more volatile as time goes by. In the last few years alone, the world has stood by and watched what has happened when the massive Tsunami hit Southern Asia, when New Orleans was rocked and basically destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, when many other hurricanes, earthquakes and landslides have taken place that have broken records many times over.
Indeed, even in our own hometowns where we live, we can see what global warming has wrought here at home. We all have been touched in some way by the events that take place because of the greenhouse effect.
On average, in the last 20 years, the entire globe has warmed up 3-5 degrees. We know what is causing all of this-the hole that is in the ozone layer.
Two major questions arise from the information that we have
1). How is the ozone layer changing, and
2). How can people prevent ozone depletion?
These are the two questions that we must tackle before we can help the situation. The first question, “How is the ozone layer changing?” is very simple, yet very complicated. Man-made greenhouse gases, such as methane and other CFC's were introduced into the atmosphere and destroyed a large part of the ozone layer, which protects the planet from extremely harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.
The hole in the ozone layer is directly over Antarctica and is approximately the size of Texas . These UV rays can cause a host of effects in the world, including skin and other types of cancer, global warming and the melting of the Polar ice caps.
These ice caps, which have been there for billions of years, are for the first time melting and breaking away from the North. As these huge ice burgs break off, they travel throughout the world causing catastrophic tsunamis, hurricanes and other weather conditions.
Pollution only contributes to the problem, and makes it harder for the environment to adapt.
Now, with all of this going on, many people feel hopeless and powerless to make a change. How can people prevent ozone depletion?
Well there are many ways in which you can do something to help this global cause. In fact, recently there was a Live Earth Day concert which was held in 7 cities around the world on 07/07/07 featuring many famous celebrities.
It was conducted to create awareness to the problem of global warming and to raise money for the cause. We must use less gas-induced machinery, they emit toxic greenhouse gases into the atmosphere at an enormous rate, and we must come together as an earth to save it.
This is our only chance, and our children won't have the chance that we did to do anything, it will be too late. That is how can people prevent ozone depletion. |
