At 3:19 p.m. local time on Monday July 17 an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck 220 miles south of Jakarta in the Indian Ocean.
If this sounds familiar it should. Everyone remembers the earthquake that hit that area on Dec.26, 2004, that caused a tsunami in which more than 230,000 people died. That quake measured 9.0. Although this quake is much smaller it also has created a tsunami. Reports say the wavewas about six feet high, compared to the wave of 2004 which was 30 feet high. Even a wave of six feet in height can cause tremendous damage to the coastline.
Any buildings and people in the vicinity would be at great risk. To get a good idea of the destruction involved check out an Asian picture tsunami. There are a number of sites on the web that shows pictures of the tsunami disaster in Asia . Earthquakes of this magnitude on land would cause considerable widespread damage. When the quake occurs in the ocean most of the deaths and property damage is a result of a tidal wave (tsunami).
Five hours after the quake on July 17, there were reports of more than 20 deaths and a number of buildings destroyed, again as the result of a tsunami.
The death toll could have been much higher, but a tsunami warning was issued, this gave people a little time to get to higher ground. Also, people have been on guard continuously since 2004.
